PART X. Wastebasket / Composite Categories:
Embedded Matter:
Struck In
Definition: This error occurs when a planchet is fed into the striking chamber together with foreign material or when a planchet is fed into a striking chamber already filled with foreign matter. In either case, the foreign material is forced into the coin by the impact of the dies.
This unusual looking 1982(P) large date, copper-alloy Lincoln cent was struck inside a striking chamber filled with foreign material. Many silvery bits of metal were forced into both faces of the coin by the strike (blue arrows).
