Part VIII. Post-Strike Striking Chamber Mishaps:
Ejection Damage:
Feeder/ejector scrapes
Definition: Scratches, scrapes, and gouges inflicted by the feeder/ejection mechanism shortly after the strike, while the coin is still within the striking chamber. They can appear on the face struck by the anvil die, the face struck by the hammer die, or both faces simultaneously.
Such damage can be distinguished from ordinary post-strike damage (which can occur anywhere) only when the scrapes are aligned with die scrapes or field-restricted struck-through errors generated by the same malfunctioning machine parts.
This broadstruck 2003-P Arkansas quarter has feeder/ejector scrapes on both faces. The obverse face – struck by the anvil die – features die scrapes and post-strike feeder scrapes which are precisely aligned with each other. The reverse face features a set of die scrapes that are perfectly aligned with, and directly across from, the obverse die scrapes. The reverse die scrapes are also aligned with a field-restricted struck-through error. Such errors occur when the feeder smears a gritty paste across the die face.
